For my FMP, I decided to research how artists use imagery and visual langauge to connect with a wide audience of young people through social media. I want to convey the message to younger people and teenagers that cyber-bullying and hate comments that are made on social media aren't acceptable and shouldn't be tolerated and can harm mental health.
i have decided to create a poster that I hope will grab the attention of young people and give them the message that cyberbullying isn't right and that they are not alone in this experience. To do this, after much experimentation I decided on using an instagrm image of a friend. I liked the original image, the 'plain' look to it, the simple black and white and lack of expression.
My plan was to divide the poster in half, with the left hand side showing a smiling person and the right hand side, where the emotion is sad. I would achieve this using photoshop tools to manipulate the face, colour and contrast. I was influenced by the poster for the film 'face off' , with the 'good' and 'evil' face. What I'm actually trying to achieve in a reflection of how someone may appear happy on the outside but in reality compared to how they really feel on the inside, due to cyberbullying and hate comments they are experiencing. Not that someoen has a good and evil side. I've been influenced by the Marvel theme and comics colour schemes and effects and it's this effect that I am trying to achieve.
Having completed the Santiago instagram capture, I sketched some ideas for a final piece to reflect the 'face off' look and then I took the edited screeenshot of the phone screen and using this image, I then manipulated this in photoshop further by placing the capture into an iPhone 7 screen. I wanted to get a strong contrast effect so that the image of Santiago would really 'pop' out of the screen, using the colour pallet and blending tools. I made a phone using these technqiues and placed the capture within the phone outlined and filled in with white, so that the black next to the white would stand right out on the poster.
I played around with angles and the position of the phone in the photo space, which I customised to my own setting, where the x-axis is at 37.54 inches and the y-axis at 53.07 inches so I had plenty of space to work with. I scaled the image down slightly so I could make room for the text underneath. Having found a position that I was satisifed with, I then digitally drew an iPhone cable half hanging by the phones charging port to the right dimension to match with the iPhone. I wanted to create the effect of 'motivational' the charger just by the port being the motivation as if to say 'just a tiny bit'. For the background I decided to use the same technique I did for the phone background so that it wasn't 'exactly identical' to the phone in the background, that way the phone would stand out from the background.
It has taken approximately 28 hours to create my final image. Below is pictures capturing the different stages of development of this final piece. I will have this printed on A1. Pictures and evaulation of the final piece to follow in my next post.
